Digital Humanity – Ethical Analyses and Responses in an Age of Transformation

Societas Ethica’s 56th ​Annual Conference Tutzing, Germany
June 27-30, 2019

What are the principal challenges posed to the field of ethics in light of digitalization? Given the profound individual, social, political, economic, technological and scientific transformations taking place, how should philosophical and theological ethicists effectively respond? How should responsibility, privacy, and human and non-human agency be defined in the digital age? To what degree are normative approaches to philosophical and theological ethics being engaged, applied or revised in light of digitalization? How should we define “the good life” in the digital age? Are human terms and the concept of emotion applicable to machines? What ethical and legal concepts are at stake and what interests are present in the intersection of humans and machines in the digital age?

We encouraged contributions from the fields of philosophy, theology, and applied ethics, as well as political and social sciences, psychology, history, law, technology studies, computer science, and robotics.

Papers could be submitted addressing the following thematic fields in this regard:

• Moral theory and philosophical anthropology in the digital age, with its

• Concepts of agency, responsibility, and self

• Epistemology

• Concepts of identity, Moral Development

• Communication, including Journalism and Social Media

• Human Rights, Privacy, and Participation

• Inclusion and Exclusion

• Law and Regulatory Instruments

• Power and Empowerment

• The Role of Markets, Stakeholders and Drivers

• Open channel (for PhD-students)

Paper proposals should have contained no more than 800 words (excluding bibliography), and clearly present a moral question or argument addressing at least one of the aforementioned thematic fields. Proposals must have been submitted by April 1st, 2019​​. Papers could be presented in the conference languages of English, German, or French.

The following two documents should have been sent as Word attachments to Galia Assadi at galia.assadi@evhn.de, using the subject line “Societas Ethica 2019 Conference.”

Document 1: Your name, first name, email address, institutional address, the title of your abstract, the thematic field(s) under which your paper proposal falls, and, if eligible, your application to participate in the Young Scholars’ Award competition (see information below).

Document 2: Your paper proposal including bibliography (max. 10 references), keywords and title with all identifying references removed. Please use Times New Roman 12 pt for body, references and keywords, and Ariel (bold) 16 pt for headline.

The abstract of the conference papers has been published in the conference proceedings. Selected papers (voluntary) have been published in a special issue of the journal​ ​De Ethica. A Journal of Philosophical, Theological and Applied Ethics​.

Societas Ethica Young Scholars’ Award is awarded to the best presentation by a young scholar. Young scholars for the purpose of this competition are doctoral students and researchers who earned their degree less than two years ago and do not have a tenure-track academic position. Societas Ethica was delighted to announce ​the 2019 St. Lawrence, the Martyr Stipends​​. These funds sponsored five PhD students to attend and participate in the 2019 Societas Ethica annual conference in Tutzing, Germany on 27-30 June 2019. The stipends covered the full applicable conference fee, which included room and board, but not travel or other related expenses.

• Two scholarships for students who are from and are studying in the Low Countries (Belgium and the Netherlands)

• One scholarship for a student who is a member of the Church of England

• One scholarship for a student who is from and is studying in Slovenia

• One scholarship for a student with a Jewish background

Societas Ethica – the European Society for Research in Ethics – has more than 300 members from approximately 35 countries. Led by the current president Prof. Dr. Arne Manzeschke, Societas Ethica endeavors to promote contacts between scholars in different countries, transcending political, ideological and religious boundaries. We welcome papers from non-members and members.
